CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Zaiaku-kan

XAVIER FLEXED HIS hand as he rested on the couch at the Iron Tiger's compound. Though the paralysis had worn off, he still felt lingering effects from the drugs. As he stretched his arm, there was a slight tingling as if the muscles had fallen asleep. Tired from his ordeal, Xavier slumped back onto the couch. As he sat there staring at the ceiling he felt grateful for the warmth he felt from the morning sun as its rays caressed his shoulders. After his previous night’s ordeal, Xavier would never take things like that for granted again. Never in his career had he encountered a foe who so quickly neutralized him. Xavier had spent most of the night walking headlong into a trap, and by the time he realized it, it was far too late. Xavier shook his head. How could he have known? All he could do now was use the insight gained by surviving. Xavier knew he wouldn't be so lucky next time if he didn't.

"How are you feeling?"

Xavier looked up and saw Kenji entering the room. He carried a tray with a kettle of tea and a small mug, which he placed before Xavier.

Xavier sighed as Kenji poured the tea. "Better, thanks. I'm still a little groggy, but I'm getting there."

Kenji settled into a chair across from Xavier. "Take your time, rest up. That was quite an ordeal. You're lucky we found you."

Xavier sipped his tea, taking the time to savor the warmth it brought. As he did, he remembered the cold, watery grave he had been left to the night before and suppressed a shiver. Xavier swore to himself that he wouldn't let it happen again. But as he sat and mulled it over, something else stuck in his head.

"I feel very fortunate indeed," Xavier replied. "However, one thing keeps sticking in my head: How did you find me?"

Kenji smiled and rubbed his chin. "I figured you would ask me that sooner or later." He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a pack of cigarettes, and idly tapped them on the table. "The truth is, we put a tracker in your shoe when you first arrived." When Xavier didn't immediately reply, Kenji shrugged and added. "For safety precautions."

Xavier nodded. "Given the circumstances, I can hardly be angry. I doubt I would be here if you hadn't come along."

Kenji lit his cigarette and blew a cloud of smoke into the air. "So, what can you tell me about this character you ran into last night? The Shizukana shi?"

Xavier sat his mug on the table. "Not much. He has a flair for the theatrical, but under the surface, he is three steps ahead of you. He isn't working alone, either. I suspect a team of people helped herd me to him. It's a tight operation. We'll have to be careful from this point on."

Kenji nodded. "Okay, we'll double security. What else do we need to do?"

"Find a doctor. We need to get a sample of my blood.
